Ćele-kula is a monument from the First Serbian Uprising that was built by the then Turkish government in Serbia out of the skulls of Serbian warriors killed in the Battle of Cegar as a sign of revenge. It is estimated that around 10,000 Turkish soldiers died in the Battle of Cegar, which took place on May 31, 1809. In order to justify such a loss, Huršid Pasha of Niš ordered that the skins be peeled from the heads of the killed Serbs, filled with straw and sent to Constantinople. Then, in order to scare the Serbs, he ordered that a stone tower be built on the eastern side of Niš as a sign of warning and that the remaining skulls of the fallen soldiers be built into its walls, "so that the center of the tower is simple, made of stone and lime, and the heads of Serbian soldiers to turn to the field and ascend from the outside".
The tower was built in the period from June to autumn 1809. 952 skulls of the dead insurgents were built into it, arranged in symmetrical rows. Although the Turks forbade the Serbs to remove the skulls from its walls, many heads were secretly removed and buried in the surrounding cemeteries.
Today, there are only 58 skulls left, and one of them is specially set aside on a pedestal, as the skull of the leader of the uprising, Stevan Sinđelić.
Ćele-kula is classified as a cultural monument of exceptional importance for the Republic of Serbia and today it is a museum object.
